Blues Junior for rock?

Does anybody use a Fender Blues Junior for playing rock or gigging in a rock band?

Stephen, I know you're asking the question you're asking but I'm wondering if there is more to it - like, for example, are you considering buying a Blues Junior and want to see if others use it successfully in a band situation?

It makes a great rock. I've placed it in rock gardens, used it as a door stop, and as a paper weight.
It works alright for rock n' roll music too. That's a broad genre, but it's one of the more cost-effective and portable tube amps and thus popular for a reason. There are options that sound better, but cost more and often weight more. I've owned a few. I mentioned how I used them (see above ).

Yes... Lots of folks use a BJr in a rock band.

I'll tell you I never arrived at a sound I liked with that amp, even after speaker swapping. It doesn't sound classic fender, it doesn't sound Vox. Sounds flubby, boxy, congested. For a small amp, my Egnater Tweaker destroys the Bjr in every conceivable way and could be used in a relatively restrained band context (mine thru a 2x12 is plenty rocking, btw).

They should change the name to Trump Jr. It's a very polarizing amp. I got a lot of good use out of mine with BillM mods and CRex speaker, and loud for 18 watts. Handled pedals well too. I was pleased with what it did for its price ... until I got a blowout Vox Bruno TB18 for $400 new. Definite step up. Went from an EL84 Fender to 6V6 Vox...
Miked the BJ for bigger gigs, because they were miking all the amps - don't know whether or not it could have stood alone without mics for that. Worked fine unmiked in bars.

They've always sounded very thin to me and I've owned a few of them over the years. There are far better choices in the price range.

Well, Iv'e been playing guitar (taking lessons) for about 6 month. Started off wanting to learn/sound like SRV, got a custom shop strat and a blues junior. Since then I kinda evolved more onto early zeppelin and early zz top, and I now have a tele with bardens. I love this guitar, its not going anywhere! But I cant seam to get the zep and zz tones down right. I am using a cpl pedals, ts9 tube screamer, landgraff mo-d distortion and a boss eq. Maybe I just need more time or maybe I should get an amp that has a gain channel/option? My blues junior has all the BillM upgrades and I put a celestion g12h heritage speaker in it. Is there a pedal that will help?

Here is my "Blues Junior" with no mods or speaker changes... It kicks ass, nothing boxy him or weak here:
View media item 19381 Just crystal clear Fender tone.

A Blues Junior will do just fine for the majority of rock stuff. The gain on the amp is self is ok, but it does well enough with pedals to make up for that. There was one point where I was running two of them in stereo, which was cool.
My ultimate Blues Junior rig was the amp, speaker swapped for a greenback, with a Marshall 18 watt head sitting on top of it and a head switcher. Blues Junior for cleans, Marshall for OD. It was as good of a setup as I've ever heard from a Blues Junior, but it sure was a pain to lug around.
